Oscar Wilde advocated and patronized an assortment of artistic movements, methods and styles. He deeply regarded the practice of art as an end unto itself. He felt that assessing art by ethical or standards was a misguided notion. He quickly became a polemical and substantial literary presence and remained so during his brief life. One of Wilde’s most peculiar and controversial stories was illustrated, at his request, by this young man of whom we have been speaking. This youthful illustrator employed dark eroticism, beautiful seeping lines, and patterns with intelligent distortions to decorate this story.
His work was made distinctive by a spectacular give and take between black and white. He employs huge planes and borders or alternatively darkness that contrasts with fragile patterns that play on a white surface. Large, sweeping, winding curves generate movement across Wilde’s pages. His pieces tend to be asymmetrical. Human characters in these drawings were generally created with deceptively simple outlines in contrast to the complexities of their environment and the objects that they interact with on paper. It is the reciprocity between the straightforward and the complex that bolsters Wilde’s work and empowers it.
A number of late 19th century design professionals were inspired by items imported from Japan and also by a rejuvenated fondness for early Renaissance and medieval artwork. The young illustrator’s work was published in several famous periodicals, and became the source from which other artists copied him, both in Europe and the United States. By the end of the 1800′s, such poster art had gradually changed from a commercial advertising form into a diverse art form all its own. Posters had already reached the color printing stage while books of that day were still printed in black and white. Design of posters typically concentrated on a single image, created to attract attention using color and form. Verbiage describing the poster’s subject or topic was intentionally and strictly limited. His process was to simplify the art in order to catch the viewer’s attention; he chose strong colors and simple lines. Much like an Impressionist painting, his lines would be somewhat fractured and hesitant. That’s the reason his work is still considered as the forerunner of the classic art nouveau designer poster.
There was another illustrator whose work is considered the first proper art nouveau poster. His pieces are characterized by more fluid contours and stronger, bolder lines. Fluid young women with loose clothes and long hair make up his most famous works. There was another popular art nouveau poster designer who created graceful, thin strips. On one of them there was typically a head to toe rendering of a lady. Patterns within these works are often inspired by fold art, Celtic works, Japanese woodcuts, mosaics from the Byzantine Era, Moorish & Arab decor, and the Hebrew alphabet.
Due to the numerous books and reprint of their work, you can easily enjoy the graphic design talents of these many artists from the turn of the century. Late 19th century and early 20th century poster art is available from dealers who specialize in it. You will find their booths in the huge international style antique shows. You should be aware that authentic originals in terrific condition go for hundreds and even thousands of dollars.
